A candle (fire/flame) is an object that accompanies people after the death of their loved ones, regardless of religion or culture. It helps to honour the memory of the deceased, but also unites people around it. It is with this intention that the LIT candleholder was created. Its shape and the way in which it is assembled allude to the relationships that exist within the family. The fire of the candle has a calming effect and creates a space for meditation/contemplation, so that we can become aware of our position/emotions and try to live them through. The project touches on the important topic of mourning, which, due to its sensitivity/intimacy, is not a popular topic. Mourning should be lived by everyone in such a way that it does not leave great traumas in our lives. It is very important that loved ones are together during this time and that we give ourselves time to process these difficult emotions. Candles give us time to meditate. There is also a move away from cemetery burials – with no place to honour the memory of the deceased, LIT offers the possibility of respecting and honouring the deceased.
