The toolkit assumes that the person using it does not need to have their own ceramics studio. It is more important to understand how it works and find partners who will help translate the design into specific objects. Rain Flowers is a solution that is well suited for collaboration with local ceramics studios, fablabs, art or technical universities, where 3D printers and molding facilities are available.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first step is to identify the location and needs. You need to answer a few simple questions: will Rain Flowers be used in a pot, on a balcony, in a flower bed, or in a larger part of the garden? Is the main problem dryness, or perhaps the desire to use excess water running off the roof or paved surfaces? This determines the choice of scale: small, medium, or large. At this stage, you can use the drawings and examples developed by Magdalena Stecka \u2013 they show what the individual elements look like and how they can be combined.<\/p>\n

The second step is to find a place where the molds and ceramic elements themselves can be made. A practical approach is to work with a 3D printing specialist who has a 3D printer. The models prepared according to the Rain Flowers design can be used to make prints that will serve as templates for preparing the molds. These molds are used to create the actual ceramic elements \u2013 reservoirs, funnels, and leaves. The technological details (type of clay, casting method, firing and glazing parameters) are worked out directly with the studio, using the design as a reference point rather than a closed catalog.<\/p>\n

The next stage is surface preparation and installation. In the case of Rain Flowers planters and balcony boxes, they are installed so that the unglazed part of the reservoir is completely surrounded by soil, and the funnel protrudes above the ground enough to freely collect rain or water added manually. In a garden bed, the reservoir is buried deeper so that the roots can benefit from the moisture as it spreads through the soil. In the largest version, installation may require more careful placement of the elements\u2014for example, in a strip where water flows or near a place where puddles naturally form on the ground.<\/p>\n

The final step is to set up the kit and observe. Ceramic leaves can be placed around the funnel so that they capture water from a larger area and direct it into the Rain Flowers. Depending on the location, they can also serve as a visual fence, marking the installation in space. After a few heavy rains, it is worth assessing how the plants in the vicinity are behaving, whether the soil retains moisture longer, and whether the number of elements is sufficient. If necessary, another reservoir can be added or the arrangement of the existing ones can be changed.<\/p>\n

The toolkit is designed to help you through the entire process \u2013 from identifying the location, choosing the scale, and working with a local workshop, to installation and further use. More detailed technical information on the dimensions of individual elements, their capacity, and details of form preparation will be supplemented based on Magdalena Stecka’s design materials and experience from the production of the first series of Rain Flowers.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n
