Why did the plastic garden chair become the theme of the 18th edition of the design festival in Łódź and what does it have to do with comfort?

Monobloc is probably the most popular and best-selling chair in the world. Most commonly found in white, waterproof, lightweight, stackable one on top of the other. It takes less than a minute to produce a single unit, and the name, derived from the words “mono” (one) and “bloc” (block), perfectly captures the way it is made.

Although Monobloc is associated with mass production and negative environmental impact, for many people it is also a symbol of utility and versatility. Present in almost every corner of the world, it is a companion in the daily life of many people. It is a chair that fulfills its purpose in a simple way, while being accessible to everyone, regardless of lifestyle or budget.

Wondering what comfort is in the current world, the only thing we can say for sure is that it does not have one and the same definition for each of us. In an attempt to understand its meaning, we will trace the history of the controversial yet simple chair, “a supporting actor on the world stage, a statistician made of plastic.”
