make me! 2014

“Bars” is a collection of decorative fabrics by the “Falbanka” duo – Izabela Sroka and Julia Cybis. The reason for its creation was a search for interesting fabrics with modern design and local character as well as the shared passion for the Polish post-war pattern designs. Despite the tradition of the Polish printed fabric and existence of modern production resources contemporary Polish textiles do not have a recognisable style. The market of decorative fabrics is dominated by Scandinavian design which fits well with modern trends, while maintaining the regional character. That is why we have decided to create a product that will be – from design to production process – 100 per cent Polish. We live in Warsaw; and therefore, the cityscape was to us a natural source of inspiration.  In the project we use patterns of window bars. Our fascination with the variety of their forms has led us to take away their basic protective function from them, making the design of secondary importance a starting point for our collection. We want to produce fabrics made using the screen printing technique utilising calico in Łódź – the capital of the Polish textile industry.

Falbanka is us! We are graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. We have known and liked each other for many years, and recently we have also been involved in design work. We are inspired by our surroundings, Warsaw, where we live, and the beauty of the Polish landscape. In our projects, we try to combine broadly understood tradition with modern design. We value high quality workmanship, which is why our products are made in Poland.
