make me! 2020
When I started working on the project for the Spanish firm Alutec I was asked to design a chair for outdoors. Then, I thought about those summer nights in south Spain and the idea of cane chairs placed by the doors of the houses in the villages came to my mind. From that point, I found inspiration in the small villages around Cabo de Gata, in Almería, south Spain, where I’m from. In a place with around 3000 sun hours per year, we should know about living outdoors. The DoñaPakyta collection is inspired by those old cane chairs used time ago. The rounded shapes and the construction of these pieces are inspired by old cane chairs. These shapes are adapted to aluminium and its production techniques. The result is a collection that transmits the feeling of classic old chairs from a new perspective. The chairs and lounge chairs are stackable and they can be used for both outdoors and indoors spaces. The structure is made of aluminium and the ropes are made of soft PVC with inner textile structure. This makes these pieces really comfortable while ensuring a long period of life even in outdoors conditions. The name DoñaPakyta (Ms Pakyta in English) comes from the name of the woman who fought to preserve the natural park of Cabo de Gata when it was about to be destroyed to build buildings. Thanks to her work, we can all enjoy this natural environment nowadays. This is my little tribute.
