“What’s cooking in Łódź?. Polish Artists Illustrate” – exhibition in Lublin
“What’s cooking in Łódź?. Polish Artists Illustrate”, or illustrations depicting Łódź’s regional dishes, will be on display from March 14 to March 30, 2025 at the headquarters of the Culture Workshop in Lublin, 7 Grodzka Street.
The exhibition showcases more than a dozen works depicting specific dishes and dishes for which the culinary art of Lodz is famous. Cabbage crook, challah with butter, herring under a quilt, zalewajka, iron noodles or leberka – all sound familiar, but we don’t always know where they came from on our tables. Our selection of works for the exhibition is subjective and includes 12 illustrations in 100 x 70 cm format, this time shown in the form of kitchen doodles, a somewhat forgotten element of interior design, although still present in many homes until the 1970s.
The representations printed or embroidered on a piece of linen or linen fabric consisted of a picture and a directly related sentence. It is worth recalling that the makatki became widespread in Poland at the turn of the 20th century and that they originated in what is now Germany and the Netherlands. Most often they were monochromatic. The patterns were embroidered with blue, sometimes red threads, but there were also multicolored ones.
The exhibition is curated by Adriana Usarek (MGS) and Michal Piernikowski (LDF), and Ida Stańczyk is responsible for the visual identity. The project was created for the Łódź Design Festival 2024 in cooperation with the Miejska Galeria Sztuki w Łodzi.
Łódź Design Festival is an event organized since 2007 by the Łódź Art Center Foundation, which supports the development of the Polish creative sector, bringing together both industry leaders and audiences not professionally connected with design. The ŁDF program is an annual review of global design trends, presentation of concepts and future visions. The Festival provides a forum for designers and companies to exchange experiences, and aims to discover and promote young talents and present the directions of design development to a wide audience. Cooperates with the Miejska Galeria Sztuki w Łodzi on an ongoing basis, and from 2019 continues an artistic and educational project on the language of Lodz, i.e., Lodzisms, which included: “Dictionary of Good Lodzisms. Interpreted by Polish illustrators” (2019), “Dictionary of contemporary Lodzisms” (2020), “Dictionary of Lodzisms” (2021) and ”Dictionary of Ukrainianisms. Interpreted by Polish and Ukrainian illustrators” (2022).
