KNOTTY is a series of sensing structures created from copper wire using a robot. Using the properties of knitwear (creating material from a single line) and the properties of copper wire (electrical conductivity) allows the structures to both feel, react, and emit sounds. KNOTTY invites to a discussion about a soft future where reality can be created from knots and lines rather than bricks and hard modules. The knitted structure is created from a single line that always remains in the process – it can be ‘knotted’ or ‘unravelled’. This responds to the problem of diminishing resources of our planet. By using copper wire, we have extended the possibilities of that old craft. This allows us to create structures that feel and respond to touch. Imagine a future in which our surroundings constantly sense and respond to our presence. It is the future of perceived buildings and bridges.
