make me! 2014

The task for us as students was to reimaging the place of sound in the home nowadays. The inspiration for the design came from the sonic experiences in a domestic environment and musical instruments classified as chordophones. In a design process we asked our self’s how does sound affect the atmosphere? Can it be a tool to create, shape and personalize spaces? The answers for these questions we tried to reflect in our design. “The Domestichorpophone” is a cabinet with the features of a musical instrument. The handcrafted maple wood combined with walnut and metal details is a reference to the classical appearance of a string instrument. When the user pushes or pulls a single drawer, sound is produced. The user can personalize sound by tuning the strings that every drawer produces different chord. In this way the user can find his or her own means of sound within the personal space.
