10 billion eggs a year are produced in The Netherlands, which makes the country the largest egg exporter in the world. An egg produces a valuable material which is often seen as waste; his shell. Luckily not all 10 billion eggshells are wasted, it’s often used as soil improver in agriculture. “Eggshell Ceramic” is a circular material derived from this industry to show new possibilities with this organic material. The project shows that we can also use the material one more time before it is given back to nature.

Atelier LVDW developed a biodegradable but strong material out of the eggshells which can be a sustainable replacement for single-use plates. The material has the look of ceramics but the benefits of a bio-material. The material can be broken down in water, the remaining calcium water can be used as a nutrient for lime-loving plants. To create a range of colour tones, Atelier LVDW worked withbiochar pigment form OurCarbon. By using this colourant the material contains an extra soil amendment.

Atelier LVDW is the material design studio of Laura van de Wijdeven, based in Rotterdam The Netherlands. She researches the future of sustainable and circular materials with a biophilic point of view. Her goal is to enrich interiors by the use of organic waste streams and bio-based matter. Subconsciously connecting its user with nature by implementing these new materials. The social connection between material, human and nature is intertwined in all her projects. Her research finds its purpose in a variety of interior surfaces and objects. The work is an interplay of reproducible design, craft, experimental and unique art works. Laura graduated at the Lifestyle Design department at Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in 2016.
