Polish artisanal brands: Splot, weaving kilms and SPLOT, producing furniture, share not only the name, but also a common product — the Weranda kilim designed by Zofia Strumiłło-Sukiennik, co-founder of the SPLOT brand, and woven by Splot, created by Przemek Cepak.

Several stories intertwine in the Weranda kilim. One is about taking inspirations from the merging of Podlasie region’s wooden porches with Ukrainian craftsmanship, another the sensitiveness represented by two different generations of artists, the designer Zofia Strumiłło-Sukiennik and the creator of the technical design — Zena Szulga-Galan. The contemporary design aesthetics of a glitch and the ancient medium of textile weaving are intertwined, the computer and the loom are closely entwined. After a moment of reflection, it becomes clear that both Podlasie and Ukraine understand the kilim as a medium, that these female artists from different countries share the language of art, that the loom and the computer have the same binary principle. Instead of opposites, we prefer to see connections, because SPLOT / Splot connects.

The brand SPLOT originated in Poland’s Podlasie region. It produces handcrafted furniture inspired by tradition, but filled with modern design. Splot is a polish brand that offers hand woven kilims, which are created in Bobowa near Cracow and Gliniany using historical and contemporary designs.

Zofia Strumiłło-Sukiennik and Przemek Cepak created their brands independently of each other at the same time, in the same part of Warsaw’s Śródmieście. Both share a love for design, respect for local artistry traditions, an artisanal production philosophy and the belief that in a more sustainable world it is cooperation, not competition, that is a value.
